Professional Photographers

It is a fairly frequent occasion that I hear someone say they are having professional pictures taken of their child and they come back with prints from Sears or JC Penney. In my opinion, these are not professional pictures. The photographers are not professionals. They are generally minimally trained on the equipment, and that only happens once they are hired. A "professional photographer," in my eyes, is a freelance photographer.

The issue that most people have with freelance photography is the cost. It is a LOT. And the photographers themselves know that. But what the clients don't know is why it costs so much. Heather Lilly recently did some number crunching and made a post on her blog about the breakdown of the money that comes in from a session. Check it out. It is eye-opening.

Seriously, we make next to nothing on photography. And Aaron and Jed are really pricey. They pretty much make enough to cover their (really nice) equipment. And that's it. Blergh.
